Note on purported Jackson family connection to Alexander Hamilton |
Scope & Content |
One handwritten note on piece of paper written by Dr. Shirls B. Jackson (1870-1950). The note reads "Alexander Hamilton / married sister of mothers / Great great grandmother / both were daughters of / Phillip Schuyler." Further research determined the above statement was inaccurate. Shirls and Chevalier Jackson's mother was Katherine Ann Jackson (nee Morange) (1836-1924). Katherine Jackson had a great-great-grandmother named Johanna Schuyler (1713-1801), who was the sister of Philip Schuyler II (1717-1784), whose daughter Elizabeth Schuyler (1757-1854) married Alexander Hamilton (1757-1804). Thus, Katherine Jackson's great-great- grandmother Johanna Schuyler was the aunt of Alexander Hamilton's wife Elizabeth Schuyler, not her sister. The confusion on the part of Shirls Jackson seemingly stems from the fact that the father of Johanna and Philip Schuyler II was also named Philip Schuyler (Philip Schuyler I (1687-1762)), and that Shirls Jackson confused the younger Philip Schuyler with his father. |
